Music Technologist, Builder
With a focus on high-quality DSP and great user experience.
I’m Tom Power, a freelance audio software developer and musician. I’ve been building music and web technology since 2015, from audio plugins and iOS apps to instruments for the browser.
My work spans real-time DSP, plugin interfaces and getting stuff done! I can join your development team or take a project from prototype through to release.
I work between Amsterdam and Dingle, in west Kerry, and run Wild Surmise, where I release my own audio software.
Tell me what you’re making01 Experience & contributions
Since 2022, I’ve worked as a freelance audio software engineer with KoalaDSP, building JUCE-based plugins and desktop applications as part of a team. My work includes real-time audio processing, GUI development and optimisation.
- Baby Audio
- Ported plugins to iOS and contributed to desktop plugin development.
- Scaler Music
- Worked as a developer on Scaler 3 for iOS and desktop. Also ported Scaler EQ to iOS and maintained Scaler 2 on iOS.
- AudioFX & Ablaze Audio
- Worked with AudioFX and Ablaze Audio to deliver audio plugins and carry out research and development.
- Excite Audio
- Contributed to the development team across multiple plugin releases.
- Plugin Boutique
- Helped build and deploy the Beatport Access subscription scheme.
- LANDR & Wavs.com
- Partnered on the design and delivery of LANDR Chromatic and LANDR Guitar. Built a plugin for browsing the Wavs.com sample library directly from a DAW.
- BlankSlate
- I collaborate with the Dingle-based studio on web projects, Shopify stores and native apps, bringing designs through to working products.
- Imagination of Things
- As Lead Creative Technologist from 2018 to 2022, I developed interactive installations and applications for museums and commercial clients. On Fabricating Alternatives, I built a Python backend combining semantic search and text generation to create question cards for creative workshops.

For client work covered by NDA, we can discuss what I’m able to share on a call.
03 How I can help
- Desktop audio plugins
- C++ and JUCE development for VST, AU and AAX plugins, from new features to release. Real-time DSP, interface development and performance optimisation.
- iOS instruments & AUv3
- Bring an existing desktop plugin to iPhone and iPad, or build a native audio app with Swift and SwiftUI. AUv3 integration, porting and ongoing maintenance.
- Audio for the browser
- Interactive instruments and audio applications, using WebAssembly and AudioWorklet.
- DSP & prototyping
- Explore a sound or an interaction with a playable Faust prototype. I also have experience integrating ONNX Runtime into JUCE projects.
- Web, Shopify & native apps
- Websites, Shopify stores and native mobile applications. Full-stack JavaScript and TypeScript, React Native, Swift, Python and cloud infrastructure.
A conversation first. Then a prototype, a clear scope, and a build we can put in people’s hands.
04 A background in music & physics
I studied theoretical and mathematical physics, then completed a master’s in Music and Media Technologies at Trinity College Dublin, both with first-class honours. My master’s project used a particle detector to generate music in a web audio application.
Earlier in my career, I built iOS and JavaScript applications at MOBGEN / Accenture Interactive’s innovation lab, with R&D work across mobile and embedded technology.
05 A few practical things
- JUCE or Rust?
- Both. JUCE is a natural fit for an existing C++ codebase. For a new project, we can choose the tools around the product and the people maintaining it.
- Can my plugin run in the browser?
- Often, yes. It depends on the DSP, dependencies and interface. I can help assess a WebAssembly port and prototype the audio in an AudioWorklet.
- Can you build an AUv3 for iPad?
- Yes. I build iOS instruments and effects with SwiftUI interfaces and AUv3 support.
- Do you work remotely?
- Yes. I’m based between the Netherlands and Ireland, and work with clients remotely.

Tell me a little about the idea, where you are with it, and the kind of help you need. A rough timeline is useful too.
